The Ultimate Multi-Tasker: Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap

I have to be honest: I change up my beauty routine a lot. I like to test out different moisturizers and shampoos, various face creams and foot rubs. But there’s one item that is always sitting in my shower, ready for action: Dr. Bronner’s Magic Pure Castile Classic Soap. If I were to list its virtues, I would include the fact that the soap is completely biodegradable and vegetable-based, it’s made with Certified Fair Trade and organic oils, and the bottle is fashioned from 100% post-consumer recycled cylinders and paper labels. So we’re talking about a really green product here. But that’s just the beginning.

The Magic Soap, as I like to call it, does 18 different things--all in one bottle. Sure, it gets your body clean, but it also serves as shampoo, laundry detergent, toothpaste, a house cleaning agent, and more (check the full list here). The package also provides great entertainment in the shower, because it’s covered with stories and quotes and thoughts on activism. Some of it sounds a little kooky, but it’s all fascinating--and much more compelling than reading that “Wash. Rinse. Repeat.” text on normal shampoo bottles.

You can snag 8 ounces of magic soap for just $6 online, at Target or at your local deli, if you happen to live near me in Brooklyn. There are 8 fragrances, including two new ones--Rose and Citrus Orange--but I’m most impressed with classic Peppermint’s ability to perk me up, even on the grayest of mornings. A little Dr. Bronner’s goes a long way.
