Hear(t) It: Dum Dum Girls

I love Dum Dum pops. They are a perfectly sized piece of hard candy on a stick. I appreciate the simplicity and efficient nature of the confection (not to mention the many flavors it comes in -- piña colada? Delicious!). So, when I heard there was a band called the Dum Dum Girls, well, my curiosity was peaked. Although the name indicates otherwise, the Dum Dum Girls is the project of just one Dum Dum, Dee Dee (AKA Kristin Gundred) a librarian from Los Angeles. She just signed with SubPop records, and her songs are a blissful, fuzzed-out sea of distortion, echoes and beautifully deadpan vocals. Take the Ronettes, put them through a punk rock makeover and you’ve got the Dum Dum Girls.

You can except a full-album release from DDG in early 2010. So, until then, you can listen to their songs on MySpace. And in case you were wondering, yes, I do like this band as much as I like its candy namesake.

Here's a video from their debut performance, playing "Hey Sis":
