Smashing Pumpkins' New Drummer is 19!

Mike Byrne's life is about to get a whole lot more interesting. The 19-year-old from Beaverton, OR just landed the gig as the Smashing Pumpkins' new drummer. After he submitted his tapes to an open call posted by the seminal 90s band, he attended a live audition in Los Angeles, where head Pumpkin (not to be confused with "pumpkinhead'), Billy Corgan, liked what he heard.

On the Pumpkins' official web site, Corgan has said: "We counted over 1,000 submissions, and what made Mike stand out was he just seemed to have that X-factor that all the great drummers have, a stunning blend of power, speed, and grace. I'm excited to work with him moving forward -- he truly deserves this opportunity. I believe in my heart he will push me to be a better musician."

Before Byrne hits the road on a small six-city tour with his new mates, take a listen to his rhythmic, prog-rock prowess on his Portland-based band's MySpace page, Moses, Smell The Roses.
