I was searching the World Wide Web for some fun, vintage jewelry when I stumbled upon an Etsy store called Petit Oiseau that makes rings, earrings and necklaces out of old pieces of Bakelite. What is Bakelite, you ask? Well, dear reader, it was the world's first synthetic plastic invented in the early 1900s. Bakelite was so strong and durable that it was used for car parts. But the wonders of Bakelite didn't translate into jewelry until the 1930s. Its smooth, glossy finish, and near indestructible qualities made it the perfect material for costume jewelry.
Thanks to Petit Oiseau, you can own your own one-of-a-kind Bakelite accessory. It's like wearing a little piece of history around your neck! Here are three great pieces from its collection:
1. Bakelite Orange Necklace (pictured, $24). It's impossible to wear this vibrant orange pendant and be in bad mood. It's also impossible not to crave a citrus fruit. (Who wants a grapefruit?)
2. Gem, Bakelite Cocktail Ring ($14).I am in love with this glossy, jet black oversized gem. It could easily be mistaken for onyx, but oh no -- it's Bakelite! Represent.
3. Bloom, Milk Glass pendant ($24). This berry-looking pendant isn't part of Petit Oiseau's Bakelite collection, but we had to include this sweet yet bold statement piece. The milky glass sits atop a red vintage disc for a pop of color. Adorable.
