Usually, I'm not one for psychological thrillers -- they scare the crap out of me. But right now I'm really enjoying being caught in the middle of one. I'm playing Heavy Rain, a video game that was created in France and is now available around the world for Playstation 3. The game is a lot like a movie. It's a role-playing game where you enter the lives of four different characters and act out scenes through them. They're all somehow involved with a serial murderer called the Origami Killer, a criminal who uses heavy rainfall to drown his victims. You can read a full synopsis of the cinematic storyline here.
As you play out scenes with each character, you choose what the character says and does. Your choices affect the narrative of the game as a whole. The main characters can be killed, and certain actions may lead to altered endings. It's kind of like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, but on screen, and way scarier.
I am loving this adventure, but I can only play in the daytime -- it's way too scary for after dark.
