ICYDK: Facebook Suicide Safety

"With great power comes great responsibility." This is what Uncle Ben told Peter Parker, but you don't have to be a secret superhero to take these words to heart. We all have power and we all should take responsibility, which is why I want to tell you about something: Did you know that on Facebook there is "Report Suicidal Content" form? I wasn't aware of this until a friend of mine pointed it out to me, so I'm passing on this important information. If you read a worrisome status update or see an upsetting photo that a friend posts, you can report it to Facebook through this form. At Facebook, there are always people monitoring potentially suicidal or violent content; after looking into each report, they may reach out to the person with information for suicide hotlines.

Last month Facebook announced a partnership with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline that lets Facebook users communicate with suicide prevention specialists in a chat room. For more information on how to deal with such a situation, take a look at Facebook's section "Helping Someone with Suicidal Content" in the Help Center.
