RED Hearts: Nail Art Essentials

RED Hearts are guests posts on I Heart Daily from the authors of RED: Teenage girls in America write on what fires up their lives today. Today’s RED Hearts post is from Alison Smith, 21, in Brooklyn, NY, who breaks down the art of DIY nails:

Here are the essentials that any nail artist should have in her kit:

Base and top coat. Seche Vite is the absolute best, in my experience the shiniest and fastest-drying around.

Precision Tip Q-Tips. Perfect for cleaning up.

An all-in-one set. This includes five dotting tools, nail glue, orange sticks, and more than 4,000 rhinestones, all for under $13. It doesn’t get better than that

Inspiration. Tumblr and Pinterest are great for nail art ideas. But don't get discouraged if the designs look too complicated or precise—many of those bloggers are professional nail artists with years of experience. On Twitter, you can follow some of the most successful nail artists, such as @naominailsnyc@sophyrobson, @jennylongworth@illustratenail@daaaanggirl, who all post images of their designs.

Sure, you may not be able to pay detailed tribute to fast food restaurants right away, but even the simplest design of polka dots can make you look at your hands and smile. That’s the point.
