We've written about She's the First, an organization that helps sponsor girls' education in developing countries (yay!), and this Friday they're partnering with Girls Who Rock to host a concert to benefit Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project, a school in India. Headlining the show is none other than season 10'sAmerican Idol star Haley Reinhart. (She volunteered -- how cool is that?). Haley has a new album dropping next week, on May 22nd, and we got a chance to talk to her about her musical ride so far:
I Heart Daily: How would you describe the ride on American Idol? Haley Reinhart: It's hard to sum it up. American Idol has been my life for the past two years and I've come a long way -- I just wrote the album I'd always dreamed of.
IHD: Yeah! The album is Listen Up. How did recording it feel? HR: I'm ecstatic. I had no idea how the writing process would work, but it turned out they threw me in head first, working with a few different songwriters to write and record each day. The more I wrote, the more I got a feel for the sounds/vibes/topics I wanted to hit on.
IHD: Tell us a little bit about its vibe -- any particularly favorite or meaningful tracks for you? HR: I grew up with classics, and I cherish that music. This album is very retro with a motown, rock, funk vibe but has a modern twist and its own sound -- I don't know what to call it, but I dig it. In terms of tracks, they're all my babies -- depending on my mood, my favorite song changes.
IHD: Besides your album (obviously), what are you hearting right now? HR: I don't watch TV much but I'm loving Behind the Music right now. I used to watch that show when I was younger and I would cry and wish it were me, and now it's happening and it's wonderful!
Thanks, Haley! It's extra fantastic that she's supporting organizations like Girls Who Rock and She's the First with her first album launch, right? Snag Haley's debut next week (watch a video for "Free" and hear some samples), and find out more about Friday's show in NYC here (where you can help spread the word about Haley and two fantastic organizations even if you can't make it to the show! It's your good deed for the day). You can also enter to win two tickets!
