The first Girl Summit, a global conference that took place in London last week, focused on shining a light on the human rights abuses of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child, Early and Forced Marriage (CEFM).
This insta-documentary, compiled from Instagram submissions, asks people around the world what Freedom means to them. Among images of swimming and traveling, the narrative shifts to talk about FGM -- a non-medical cutting of female genitals in preparation for marriage in some cultures. The Summit also focuses on CEFM -- according to a UNICEF report, one in three girls in developing countries is married by age 18, which ends her access to education and life skills, sometimes at ages as young as 8.
The good news is that more and more people are saying "no" to these dark practices, even within the cultures that value them. Girl Summit wants to "get behind, support and accelerate their efforts to end them," and they're requesting your support in stopping FGM and CEFM within the next generation. Make a pledge to do your part here.
