Sometimes I think about older people in nursing homes, and I wonder how often they get visitors. Is that weird? I want to know that they feel loved. We're all looking for moments in which we're seen, right? Those times when someone checks in out of the blue or sends a "thinking of you" text — they mean something. I found The Forgotten Ones: Compassion for the Elderly on Facebook, and I love their list of nursing homes where you can send a note (or notes) to be passed out among elderly residents. Imagine what a mail call full of happy envelopes or drawings or little cards with brief messages can do.
In short: You have the power to make someone's day, and this is one very good way.
