Teen Instagram Star Says "Bye" To Social Media Fame

I have something really interesting to report to all of you today. Just recently, I was writing about how social media (especially Instagram) has impactful negative effects on young women's self-esteem. All those selfies? Yeah, not so good for the soul.

Well, a few days ago, super famous Australian teen Instagrammer Essena O'Neill decided she had had enough. No more gratuitous, super foxy, "candid" shots of her on the beach, in bikinis, living it up. "Having it all on social media means absolutely nothing in real life," she admits. "Without realizing, I've spent majority of my teenage life being addicted to social media, social approval, social status and my physical appearance. Social media, especially how I used it, isn't real."

Deciding something had to change, she's turned her attention away from likes and followers and towards creating a new website, Let's Be Game Changers. It contains lots of behind-the-scenes insights into her life as a social media darling, and also encourages building self-esteem and confidence through various outlets and means.

So, there you have it — the girl who everyone thought had it all, was really just like everyone else. The messy parts of life? There's no filter that can make them disappear. And, besides, those not-so-perfect moments are usually the best ones.
